Sustainability in chronic disease prevention: lessons from the Salud al Paso program in Ecuador

ABSTRACT
This study analyzes the conditions and possibilities of sustainability <italic>Salud al Paso</italic> program Metropolitan Health Secretariat Municipality Quito, Ecuador, as an example for similar initiatives, in context changes made by new administration May 2019. The analysis implementation this initiative, focused on prevention noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), was based program’s user database, information gathered perspectives operational staff, knowledge program, opinion local leaders Quito District, well official information. Based data, identified factors that could have facilitated or hindered its documented rationale to suspend on-demand activities included limit care populations under municipal responsibility (day-care centers, schools colleges, markets, elder programs, employees) patients with cardiometabolic risk. insufficient institutionalization conceived a project vision time, mentioned possible obstacle staff. growing prevalence NCDs requires initiatives their prevention, which must be institutionalized ensure continuity overcome eventual government. In addition, future interventions should establish better sectoral coordination articulation, especially Ministry Public other service networks.
