Identifying distinctions between undergraduate and graduate global health programs

ABSTRACT
# Background The field of global health has traditionally been taught at the graduate level, but there are a small number undergraduate level programs in U.S. development poses important questions for program administrators terms developing competencies and navigating overlap between programs. Specifically, which should students be expected to master how do these intersect with those programs? Methods Faculty university Mid-Atlantic region were invited participate an in-depth interview about course content their expectations Interviews covered courses they teach (e.g., prerequisites, readings, competencies) relevant level. A total 7 faculty members interviewed. recorded transcribed Microsoft Word (Microsoft Inc, Seattle, WA, USA), then analyzed common themes. Results Interview responses indicate diverse discipline-specific approaches courses. When asked articulate what expect learn from courses, participants noted that basic concepts can serve as foundation further studies or work experiences. Some provide foundation, continue education. Others thought employment opportunities achievable degree Global Health. There is consensus that, independent discipline, field-based practicum recommended apply classroom real-world settings. Conclusions These findings present perspectives on programs, students, core competencies. salient challenge instructors identify where curriculum end begin. Future research expand institutions established already underway using online questionnaire capture range institutions.
