ABSTRACT
Objectives: To evaluate the oxygen cost of gait and measure physical activity profiles, including time spent sedentary, in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) matched controls.Method: We recruited 19 RA controls for age, sex, body mass index (BMI). Demographic details clinical characteristics population were recorded. Oxygen uptake per metre walked (oxygen cost) was measured laboratory using a portable gas analyser. Activity profiles number steps day, sedentary (sitting or lying down), intensity walking recorded over 5 days an monitor, from which classified by categories. Levels pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression recorded. Results: People slower self-selected speed (p < 0.001) than but there no difference = 0.992) between groups. took fewer 0.001), had increased 0.029) lower at cadences commensurate moderate to vigorous (MVPA) compared 0.001). Pain, higher group (all p 0.001).Conclusions: The this cohort similar that increase reduction MVPA. Clinical symptoms such as depression, fatigue may explain changes activity/sedentary behaviours require further investigation.
