Perceptions and Barriers of Hands Hygiene Practice among Medical Science Students in a Medical School in Malaysia

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hand hygiene is the single, most critical measure for reducing risk of transmitting organisms to patients and health care providers. To our knowledge, none such study on Malaysian university student exists in literature. Therefore, objective was explore perceptions barriers hand's practice among students. Methods: Focus group discussion conducted January-2010 40 medical science students from Management Science University (MSU). Simple random sampling used, ethics were obtained participants. The divided into five focus groups; number each ranged between 8-10 members. data classified various categories, analyzed manually. Results: majority participants mentioned that they frequently washed their hands using soap. Some only with plain water. However, laziness main barrier frequent hand washing, followed by lack nearby water supply then feeling are not dirty enough be infected. agreed washing clinically significant spread infectious diseases; some them disagreed. Majority knew technique university. Conclusion: Medical still have misconception negative attitude towards practice. Multidisciplinary strategies needed improve
