ABSTRACT
✓ An awake-primate model has been developed which permits reversible middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion during physiological monitoring. This method eliminates the ischemia-modifying effects of anesthesia, and correlation neurological function with blood flow (CBF) neuropathology. The was used to assess brain's tolerance focal ischemia. MCA occluded for 15 or 30 minutes, 2 3 hours, permanently. Serial monitoring evaluated function, local CBF (hydrogen clearance), other parameters (blood pressure, gases, intracranial pressure). After weeks, neuropathological evaluation identified infarcts their relation recording sites. Middle usually caused substantial decreases in CBF. Variable reduction correlated directly variable severity deficit. Release at up hours led clinical improvement. Pathological examination showed microscopic foci infarction after minutes ischemia, moderate large most cases permanent occlusion. Local appeared define thresholds paralysis infarction. When dropped below about 23 cc/100 gm/min, occurred. fell 10 12 gm/min 17 18 occlusion, irreversible damage observed. These studies imply that some acute hemiplegia, range, might be improved by surgical revascularization. Studies help identify suitable emergency
