Congenital Middle Ear Cholesteatoma in Children; Retrospective Review of 35 Cases

ABSTRACT
Congenital middle ear cholesteatoma (CMEC) is a rare disease entity in otolaryngology. However, we try to assess the characteristic features and recurrences of CMEC pediatric patients according stages, determine value preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan. Retrospective review 35 cases under age 15 yr that had been treated at tertiary referral center from 1995 through 2006. The main outcome measures were CT findings, surgical recurrence rate hearing assessment. Preoperative scan accurately predicted extent seen during surgery 30/35 (85.7%). was 5.7% (2/35) all recurred stage IV. In cases, cholesteatomas extended sinus tympani facial recess revisional operation as well initial operation. So concluded essential defining existing pathology. intraoperative extension location influence surgery. higher careful eradication disease, particularly region recommended.
