ABSTRACT
Humanity has never benefited more from the ocean as a source of food, livelihoods, and well-being, yet on global scale this been accompanied by trajectories degradation persistent inequity. Awareness spurred policymakers to develop an expanding network governance instruments, catalyzed civil society pressure public private sector, motivated engagement general consumers constituents. Among local communities, diverse examples stewardship have rested foundation care, knowledge agency. But does analog for exist in context globally active multinational corporations? Here, we consider seafood industry its efforts navigate new reality through governance. We examine paradigmatic events history sustainable movement, boycotts 1970s emergence certification measures, benchmarks, voluntary environmental programs. note four dimensions which actors within aligned with theoretical concepts stewardship, describe (1) moving beyond compliance, (2) taking systems perspective, (3) living uncertainty, (4) understanding humans embedded elements biosphere. In conclusion, identify emerging challenges suggest urgent need embrace broader notion that extends seafood.
