ABSTRACT
Kelp forests are productive coastal ecosystems that provide a range of ecosystem services. Mapping the distribution and area occupied by kelp is critical step to identify their functions services, including role in carbon cycle, detect changes distribution. We compiled quantitative data dominant genera Laminaria Saccharina across Nordic region, allowing us separate (areas with dense or moderately coverage) from occurrences single few individuals. By fitting boosted regression trees data, we modelled predicted region. Despite large scale analyses, models captured well kelps’ environmental affinities presence high accuracy. Dense found along rocky shores all countries, except brackish Baltic Sea, largest areas Norway, Greenland Iceland. The results this study set scene for future studies on importance contribution marine budget.
