ABSTRACT
Introduction This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and molecular characterization of Leptospira species in Belgrade, Serbia, an area where this disease is underexplored. Specifically, sought employ multilocus sequence typing analyses fill gap understanding diversity distribution within region. Methods A comprehensive analysis was conducted on kidney samples obtained from Norway rats ( Rattus norvegicus ) urban environment. The utilized diagnostic techniques including real-time PCR targeting lipL32 gene performing sequence-based schemes utilizing adk, icdA, lipL32, lipL41, rrs2, secY genes. These methodologies were applied ascertain presence characterize different serovars, respectively. Results findings revealed two three separate serovars Belgrade area. identified L. kirschneri serovar Mozdok Serbia for first time, a significant discovery previously undocumented pioneering investigation sheds light Serbia. Discussion underscores importance employing methods gain insights into epidemiology species. significantly contribute both local global perspectives leptospirosis epidemiology, providing vital development effective control strategies interventions. Summary In our recent study, we explored performed species, bacteria responsible leptospirosis, wild time such Leptospirosis serious that affects animals humans, often transmitted through contact with water contaminated by infected animals. Our focus which types present these Excitingly, discovered particular strain , known as kirshneri Mozdok, finding because it spread It also raises awareness about potential health risks associated serovar, unknown work fits broader context surveillance public health. By identifying specific region, can better understand take steps prevent leptospirosis. not just important scientists studying infectious diseases; has real implications officials, veterinarians, anyone concerned preventing treating highlight need ongoing monitoring wildlife synanthropic fauna, protect animal human
