ABSTRACT
Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is increasingly used as a neuroaxonal injury biomarker in the elderly. Besides age, little known about how other physiological factors like renal function and body mass index (BMI) alter its levels. Here, we investigated association of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) BMI with sNfL large sample elderly patients atrial fibrillation (AF).This cross-sectional analysis from Swiss-AF Cohort (NCT02105844). We measured using an ultrasensitive single-molecule array assay. calculated eGFR chronic kidney disease epidemiology collaboration (CKD-EPI) creatinine (eGFRcrea) creatinine-cystatin C (eGFRcrea-cys) formulas, weight height measurements. evaluated role determinants levels multivariable linear regression adjusted R2 (R2adj).Among 2,277 participants (mean age 73.3 years), eGFRcrea showed inverse curvilinear after adjustment for cardiovascular comorbidities. also independent, sNfL. The R2adj models eGFRcrea, alone was 0.26, 0.35, 0.02, respectively. A model combined explained 45% variance. Sensitivity analyses (i) further adjusting vascular brain lesions (N = 1,402 MRI) (ii) eGFRcrea-cys yielded consistent results. In AF cohort, both were associated sNfL, but only substantial proportion This should be taken into account when or disease.
