Influence of Isometric Exercise Combined With Electromyostimulation on Inflammatory Cytokine Levels, Muscle Strength, and Knee Joint Function in Elderly Women With Early Knee Osteoarthritis

Background and Objectives: Muscle strengthening exercise is suggested to beneficial for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) electrical muscular stimulation reported be effective in improvement of muscle strength. This study examined whether isometric combined whole body-electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) can improve serum cytokine levels, strength, function elderly women early OA. Materials Methods: randomized controlled included 75 participants assigned into three groups: the control group (CON), (ISOM), electromyostimulation (ISOM + EMS). The two groups performed their respective programs 8 weeks, 3 days a week, 30 min day. main exercises both were continuously during 20 an alternation 6-s contraction 4-s break. At pre- post-intervention, anthropometric variables, Knee Injury Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), blood sampling biomarkers including interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, C-reactive protein, resistin performed.
