ABSTRACT
Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) are widespread in plant genomes. They result from the random integration of sequences into host genomes by horizontal DNA transfer and have potential to alter gene expression. We performed a large-scale search for co-transcripts including caulimovirid 1,678 230 algal species characterized 50 45 distinct belonging lycophytes, ferns, gymnosperms angiosperms. found that insertion badnavirus EVEs along with Ty-1 copia mobile occurred late blight resistance ( R1 ) brinjal eggplant Solanum melongena wild relatives genus disrupted orthologs. two previously unreported badnaviruses were identified genome S. , whereas an additional novel aethiopicum cultivated scarlet eggplant. Insertion these viruses ancestral lineages direct would during last 3 Myr, further supporting distinctiveness group within giant .
