Intergenerational Educational Inequality and Its Transmission in China’s Elite Universities

ABSTRACT
China is experiencing high social inequality accompanying influential education reforms. The Independent Freshmen Admission (IFA) policy was one of the multiple strategies in higher reforms against context and expansion education. By comparing students admitted through IFA with those by National College Entrance Examination (NCEE), we examined how family advantages contributed to terms educational opportunity, process, results. Using data from an elite university Beijing, found that: (1) Family improved a student’s likelihood being IFA, exhibiting opportunity inequality. (2) No significant difference academic grades existed between NCEE. In comprehensive quality, however, recruited performed significantly better than (3) capital not only increased but also, direct indirect effects, their quality performance receiving student association practice awards.
