ABSTRACT
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic recurrent mood associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, indexed by heart rate variability (HRV). Changes in HRV between states are sparsely studied longitudinally. We aimed to compare of hospitalized manic individuals their own euthymic selves naturalistic observational study.34 were included, which 16 lost follow-up. Ultimately 15 patients provided reliable data both and state, using photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor wristbands overnight. calculated measures Root Mean Square Successive Differences (RMSSD), High-frequency (HF: 0.15-0.40 Hz), Low-frequency (LF: 0.40-0.15 Very low-frequency (VLF: 0.0033-0.04 Total power Sample Entropy 5-min night-time resting samples. compared state within paired t-tests linear regression control for age sex.HRV was lower the when all metrics (p ≤ 0.02), large medium effect sizes (g = 1.24 0.65). changes not significantly affected or sex. This longitudinal study provides evidence euthymia, indicating an association ANS dysregulation bipolar state. This corroborates previous cross-sectional studies, although may be less clear reversed hypomanic states. Further investigation larger samples warranted.
