Health Worker Absenteeism in Selected Health Facilities in Enugu State: Do Internal and External Supervision Matter?

ABSTRACT
Background: Absenteeism is widespread in Nigerian health facilities and a major barrier to achievement of effective Universal Health Coverage. We have examined the role internal (by managerial staff within facilities) external managers at higher level) supervision arrangements on worker absenteeism. Specifically, we sought determine whether these forms any play reducing absenteeism Enugu State Nigeria. Methods: conducted interviews with 412 workers urban rural areas State, South-Eastern used binary logistic regression estimate different types selected State. Results: Internal significantly reduce (odds ratio = 0.516, p 0.03). In contrast, existing were associated small but significant increase (OR 1.02, 0.043). Those reporting better financial situation more likely report being absent 1.36, < 0.01) there was no association age marital status respondents. Our findings also pointed potential for alternative supervision, provided supportive rather than punitive way, example by community groups monitoring activities trying understand what support may need, or beyond work environment. Conclusion: The system Nigeria not working alternatives that take holistic approach lived experiences might offer an alternative.
