ABSTRACT
Background The global rising prevalence and incidence of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported during the past decades. However, details regarding evolution MS burden have not fully studied. This study aimed to investigate global, regional, national temporal trends in incidence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from 1990 2019 using age-period-cohort analysis. Methods We performed a secondary comprehensive analysis DALYs by calculating estimated annual percentage change obtained Global Burden Disease (GBD) study. independent age, period, birth cohort effects were evaluated an model. Results In 2019, there 59,345 incident cases 22,439 deaths worldwide. number incidences, followed upward trend, whereas age-standardized rates (ASR) slightly declined 2019. High socio-demographic index (SDI) regions had highest ASR while rate medium SDI are lowest. Six which include high-income North America, Western Europe, Australasia, Central Eastern Europe higher than other age effect showed that relative risks (RRs) reached peak at ages 30–39 50–59, respectively. period RRs increased with period. later lower early cohort. Conclusion all increased, declined, different regions. such as European countries substantial MS. There significant for globally, DALYs.
