ABSTRACT
Algorithms are involved in decisions ranging from trivial to significant, but people often express distrust toward them. Research suggests that educational efforts explain how algorithms work may help mitigate this distrust. In a study of 1,921 participants 20 countries, we examined differences algorithmic trust for low-stakes and high-stakes decisions. Our results suggest statistical literacy is negatively associated with situations, while it positively scenarios high algorithm familiarity. However, explainability did not appear influence algorithms. We conclude having enables individuals critically evaluate the made by algorithms, data AI, consider them alongside other factors before making significant life This ensures solely relying on fully capture complexity nuances human behavior decision-making. Therefore, policymakers should promoting statistical/AI address some complexities paves way further research, including triangulation direct observations user interactions or physiological measures assess more accurately.
