ABSTRACT
This work tests the ability of a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar to measure respiratory rate and heartbeat subject in challenging indoor scenarios. To simulate realistic configuration for ambient assisted living (AAL) applications, which thorax orientation towards antenna is typically unknown, four different scenarios were considered. Measurements performed on five volunteers positioned with chest, left, back, right side facing antenna, respectively. The 5.8 GHz antennas used measurements suitably designed considered application. obtain low cost compact system, series-fed arrays preferred over other topologies. geometry patches was opportunely shaped reduce lobe level (SLL) increase bandwidth, thus ensuring good system performances. In all scenarios, vital signs extracted from signal compared ones collected by photoplethysmograph belt, as references. A statistical analysis measured data subjects orientations performed, showing that able high accuracy both configurations.
