ABSTRACT
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, is characterized by abnormal activation inflammatory cells. The increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), further amplify inflammation. We evaluated dose response relationship IL-1β TNF-α levels severity airflow limitation, differential responses in between biomass COPD (BMS-COPD) tobacco smoke (TS-COPD) using a case control design 160 subjects. Patients with had higher serum both compared to healthy controls. A large difference was observed TS-COPD BMS-COPD, where patients much levels. Serum were BMS-COPD. Levels correlated better limitation than Both negative linear Forced Expiratory Volume 1st second (FEV1) six-minute walk distance. correlations stronger FEV1 St George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) scores body mass index (BMI) not significant. In conclusion, cytokines are differently elevated respectively.
