ABSTRACT
Harbours are known introduction foci of marine alien species. They act as recipients new introductions and sources for regional spread. We report on subtidal surveys fouling communities from 14 harbours along the coastline South Africa that were used to identify predictors high species numbers in support prioritisation monitoring actions by authorities. The varied nature large, international shipping hubs small, fishing recreational marinas.Fouling assemblages assessed using visual scrape sampling ensure detection mobile small inconspicuous species. In total, 29 recorded, 15 which detected outside their previously ranges. The number recorded per harbour five to.Results revealed associated with presence yachts low primary productivity.Harbours had occurred areas mean Chl a minimum levels lower than 0.21 mg.m -3 highest species, while without larger 0.1km 2 supported fewest species. These findings suggest can be particularly regions productivity. While applicability these other remains tested, this work suggests fall within category could prioritised species.
