Measuring harm-free care in childbirth: a pilot application of the maternity safety thermometer in Brazil

ABSTRACT
Introduction: In Brazil, interventions during labor and childbirth are harmful and, for the most part, unnecessary. addition, there is a high prevalence of abuse disrespect women babies this period. Objective: To describe maternal neonatal harm harm-free care in Brazilian maternity setting. Methods: Pilot application Portuguese version Maternal Safety Thermometer (MST) by cross-sectional study public Data collection was made at two timepoints. Results: 140 were included. Over 84% had postpartum sutured wound, resulting from caesarean section, an episiotomy, or perineal trauma. Puerperal infection, especially on frequent physical harm. Women’s perception safety, including being left alone labour, feeling their safety concerns not taken seriously, decreased 80.6% to 43.3% second timepoint. Using MST helped improve quality medical records since critical information about patient’s health status properly recorded, even absent. Conclusion: concise tool includes indicators related short time range. However, suggests that can underestimate if it used assess maternities with excessive levels intervention, poor reporting harms (i.e., blood loss), as settings.
