ABSTRACT
Acinetobacter baumannii is opportunistic in debilitated hospitalised patients. Because information from some South American countries was previously lacking, this study examined the emergence of multi-resistant A. three hospitals Cochabamba, Bolivia, 2008 to 2009.Multiplex PCR used identify main resistance genes 15 isolates. RT-PCR measure gene expression. The genetic environment these also analysed by amplification and sequencing. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined for key antibiotics presence an efflux pump inhibitor, 1-(1-napthylmethyl) piperazine.Fourteen strains found be multi-resistant. Each strain have blaOXA-58 with ISAba3-like element upstream, responsible over-expression latter subsequent carbapenem resistance. Similarly, ISAba1, upstream blaADC caused cephalosporin resistance; mutations gyrA(Ser83 Leu) parC (Ser-80 Phe) commensurate fluoroquinolone In addition, adeA, adeB over-expressed. All isolates positive at least two aminoglycoside genes. This one first reports analyzing multi-drug profile isolated Bolivia shows that theblaOXA-58, together modifying enzymes DNA topoisomerases are multi-resistance bacteria difficulty treating infections them.
