"Music co-listening over video chat to support intergenerational connectedness: An exploratory study"

ABSTRACT
Background: Meaningful intergenerational interaction can help older adults view aging more positively, provide a means to pass on their cultural identity, and support general well-being.However, maintaining relationships may be difficult due geographical separation, lack of common conversation topics, scheduling challenges, recently, pandemic-related restrictions.We explored music co-listening over typical video-conferencing platform see how such platforms rich sustained connectedness between grandparents teen grandchildren.Objective: In this research, we the following questions: What patterns happen when grandchildren share with each other synchronous video conferencing tool?What types interactions around online should communications technology support, in order inter-generational conversation?Method: We conducted qualitative study where grandparent grandchild colistened favourite songs had about them.Results: From exploratory study, found that inclusion provided 'Ticket-to-Talk' our dyads (6 dyads, 12 participants) by supporting peripheral quality mu-sic.Our 'Private DJ' mechanism simplified process colistening conversing it for dyads.The planning share, anticipating party's song selections, watching partner's selection, having time have conversation, all seemed contribute making communication enjoyable dyads.Conclusion: Our results ongoing design family technologies include increased co-activities as co-listening, make easier separated members meaningful communications.
