ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Approximately half of the families asked to consider donation a relative's organs decline give consent. Understanding difference between stated public support organ and actual behavior is key decreasing shortage donor organs. OBJECTIVES: To gain insight into experiences potential define features donation-request process other factors that are associated with consent for donation. METHODS: A structured telephone interview was conducted immediate next kin 164 medically suitable donors. Interviews 30 60 minutes long were held members both nondonor 4 6 months after death study participant's relative. RESULTS: Several donation: characteristics patient patient's family, beliefs attitudes about transplantation, whether family knew deceased's wishes donation, family's satisfaction hospital care their relative received, specific aspects process, understanding brain death. CONCLUSIONS: Organ rates could be increased by enhancing quality ensuring request handled in way meets families' informational emotional needs.
