ABSTRACT
Biopsy of palpable breast masses can be performed manually by palpation guidance or under imaging guidance. Based on retrospective studies, image guided biopsy is considered more accurate than biopsy; however, these techniques have not been compared prospectively. We conducted this prospective study to verify the superiority and determine size beneficial effect over biopsy.Over a period 18 months, 36 patients each with were randomized into arms. Ultrasound was used for in 33 mammographic (stereotactic) three patients. All biopsies using 14 gauge automated core needles. Inconclusive, suspicious imaging-histologic discordant repeated.Malignancy found 30 women arm 27 arm. Palpation had sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) negative (NPV) 46.7, 100, 27.3 per cent, respectively, diagnosing cancer. Nineteen (52.8%) required repeat because inadequate samples (7 19), findings (2 19) discordance (10 19). On biopsy, malignancy all cases discordance. Image 96.3 cent sensitivity 100 specificity. There no case sample biopsy. Our results showed that masses, superior terms false rate rates.
