Time-motion study of auxiliary nurse midwives of a primary health center from Wardha District of Maharashtra

ABSTRACT
Introduction: In the rural health-care delivery system of India, auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) is key frontline field-level functionary who interacts directly with community. A heavy responsibility implementation health programs rests on shoulders ANMs. As ANMs are central to services under National Rural Mission including supervision work done by accredited social activist, we thought it prudent analyze their pattern so that efficiency could be improved upon. Objective: The objective was study workload and identify causes for improving Materials Methods: This an observational cross-sectional conducted among four purposively chosen from a primary center (PHC) in Central India using time-motion as tool. An ANM's were studied constructing 24-h recall. One ANM followed week, similarly other another week activities entire month covered. To ensure quality, schedules reported each day cross-checked concerned supervisor or medical officer PHC. Results: free-listing pile-sorting exercise performed ANMs, 41 them clubbed five major categories. It found meeting day, record keeping most tasks, whereas tasks hardly performed. On home visits, disease-related activity time, supporting second activities. Majority time spent over which not related job profile. Conclusion: We conclude clarity about responsibilities lacking available working effectively utilized. Time such travel waiting maximum. Training manage priority improve skills required.
