HIV Risk profile and its socio-demographic correlates among long-distance truckers in West Bengal, India: Evidence from national HIV sentinel surveillance 2017

Long-distance truckers (LDTs) belong to a special sentinel group with potentially high risk of acquisition HIV owing their mobility, sociodemographic vulnerability, and high-risk behaviors.The objective is estimate the prevalence identifies its correlates among representative population LDTs in West Bengal, India.Between May July 2017, Sentinel Surveillance (HSS) was conducted Bengal by National AIDS Control Organization. A total 749 were recruited for study, interviewed, tested HIV. Descriptive logistic regression analysis socio-demographics, sexual behavior, serostatus performed using SAS 9.3.2.The LDT 1.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.4-2.0). Mean age 32.8 years (standard deviation 8.5), 77.1% currently married, 89.9% literate, 85.7% visited HSS site collecting condoms or seeking medical care treatment, 53.1% rural residents, 86.7% had sex at least once female partner other than wife past 6 months, 2.7% male 1.7% injected drugs recreational purpose. Higher (odds ratio [OR] 1.1 [95% CI 1.0-1.1]), literate (OR 0.3 0.1-0.9]), visiting sites treatment (adjusted OR [AOR] 0.2 0.1-0.6]), residence 0.1-0.3]) duration stay home (AOR 1.3 1.1-1.5]) found be significant predictors having wife.High burden calls urgency implementation targeted intervention minimize fight against HIV/AIDS.
