ABSTRACT
Background: Despite promising theoretical benefits, there is a paucity of clinical evidence supporting the use of PRP in managing Trigeminal Neuralgia. This study aims to investigate the potential benefits and efficacy of PRP in Trigeminal Neuralgia, a condition that significantly impairs the quality of life, causing discomfort, anxiety, and depression. Objectives: To compare the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection as an adjunct with carbamazepine and only carbamazepine as a therapy in trigeminal neuralgia patients. Methods: This hospital-based original study included 10 clinically confirmed cases of trigeminal neuralgia based on the (ICHD-3) International classification of headache disorder, who were randomly and equally (1:1) assigned to two groups. Both groups were evaluated for pain by visual analog scale [VAS], and trigeminal neuralgia symptoms at baseline and at a 4-week and 6 month follow-up. Results: The use of PRP solution in trigger zones in trigeminal neuralgia patients had a better effect on pain relief and trigeminal neuralgia symptoms without any relapse. Conclusion: PRP, along with carbamazepine, appears to be a more effective treatment modality compared to only giving carbamazepine in the management of trigeminal neuralgia patients. Rationale of study- In most of the previous studies PRP injections were aimed at achieving symptomatic relief as well as functional relief in muscle injuries and inflammatory conditions. However, no study on trigeminal neuralgia is available in the literature till date.
