ABSTRACT
Abstract Purpose: To investigate the neuroprotective effect of riluzole through matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 in rats, an experimental glaucoma model. Methods: A total 28 Wistar albino 3–4 months old, weighing 250–300 g, were divided into four groups; Group I (control), II (glaucoma), III (glaucoma + corn oil dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), IV DMSO riluzole). model was created by episcleral vein cauterization left eyes II, III, subjects. After formation model, daily intraperitoneal (5 mg/kg) administration started. At end 7 weeks, retinal tissues taken some parts them stained with hematoxylin eosin for histopathological examinations. In other part, MMP-2 expressions determined using real-time quantitative PCR immunohistochemical techniques. Results: As a result, statistically significant increase intraocular pressures (IOP) found Groups when compared control after weeks ( P < 0.001). There decrease IOP group to group. Expression levels both genes decreased slightly administration. evaluation groups, it observed that there no differences between findings degeneration ganglion cells, hemorrhage, differentiation layers. Conclusions: exhibited expression DMSO) 5 mg/kg riluzole) groups II. Given received injections DMSO, this conclusion drawn.
