ABSTRACT
We evaluated clinical outcomes after drainage for malignant pericardial effusion with imminent or overt tamponade.Between August 2001 and June 2007, 100 patients underwent pericardiocentesis effusion. Adequate follow-up information on the recurrence of survival status was available 98 patients.Recurrence occurred in 30 (31%), all whom were diagnosed adenocarcinoma. Multivariate analysis indicated that adenocarcinoma lung (hazard ratio [HR], 6.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.9 to 22.3; p=0.003) progressive disease despite chemotherapy (HR, 4.3; CI, 1.6 12.0; p=0.005) independent predictors recurrence. Survival rates three months differed significantly type primary cancer; 73%, 18%, 90% 30% lung, squamous cell carcinoma breast cancer other cancers, respectively.Recurrence are dependent response chemotherapy. Patients may be good candidates surgical avoid repeated pericardiocentesis, but is considered effective as palliative management cancers.
