Risk Factors of Leishmania Infection among HIV-Infected Patients in Trang Province, Southern Thailand: A Study on Three Prevalent Species

ABSTRACT
There are two main species of Leishmania reported in Thailand, that is, siamensis and martiniquensis. Moreover, leishmaniasis cases caused by donovani complex were also reported. is still a lack information concerning risk factors infection Thailand. This study aimed to identify the these three among HIV-infected patients. A cross-sectional was conducted HIV clinic at Trang Hospital, Nested PCR sequencing performed detect DNA blood saliva samples species. standardized questionnaire used interview individuals. total 526 patients recruited this study. Sixty-three (12.0%) positive for L. siamensis, 24 (4.6%) martiniquensis, 23 (4.4%) complex. Risk included using intravenous drug (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.01, 95% CI: 1.01-4.02). martiniquensis female gender (AOR 4.23, 1.52-11.75), recreational 3.43, 1.00-11.74), having comorbidities 4.94, 2.00-12.21). opportunistic 4.22, 1.00-17.79), CD4 count 200-500 cells/mm3 3.64, 1.14-6.86), not insect repellent 3.04, 1.08-8.58). identified The data could be useful disease prevention control. Further studies on trends preventive measures recommended.
