Analysis of the Potential Deceased Donors in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Units of Korea

ABSTRACT
Background/Aims The shortage of donor organs is the main problem that needs to be solved in Korea as well other countries. To expand pool, we retrospectively reviewed brain-dead patients who expired without organ donation neurosurgical intensive care units (NICU) and evaluated potential deceased donors (PDDs). Methods Between January 2008 December 2008, PDDs NICU were recruited from 52 secondary or tertiary referral hospitals Korea. data a total 2,288 PDD cases collected questionnaire. Of these, 1,980 eligible for analysis. Results There 1,166 males (58.9%) 793 females (40.1%) with mean age 57.6±18.0 years (21.2% 5th decade; 21.0% 6th decade). most common cause death was cerebrovascular accident (n=1,034; 52.2%). Glasgow Coma scale 3 23.1% 4 12.1% PDDs. Craniotomy performed 996 (50.3%). Sepsis developed 276 (14.0%) among PPDs. Diagnostic procedure assessment brain 194 (9.8%). seroprevalence HBsAg HCVAb 1.7% 0.6%, respectively. AST/ALT level on admission after 80.9±344.9/49.0±162.19 308.6±1,485.2/142.5±596.27 IU/L, Uriney protein normal 1,221 (61.7%) death. 1980 PDDs, 19 (1%) donated their transplantation. Conclusion Only small percentage We suggest continuous active action needed increase donors.
