Resident Perceptions of Service Versus Clinical Education

ABSTRACT
Abstract Background The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education states that education needs to have priority over service. There is a potential residents negative perception of activities termed Objective To understand how one obstetrics and gynecology program conceptualize service clinical in their daily training experiences. Methods We conducted qualitative survey using semistructured interviews with 9 gynecology. Verbatim transcripts underwent phenomenologic analysis themes statements exemplifying the essence nuances residents' Results conceptualization encompassed 6 categories, some overlap between terms. category (1) tasks situations educational value indirect patient care; (2) high values subdivided into direct care teacher-learner interactions; (3) traditional activities, including reflection. Service denoted: little no categories; described as community patients communities. Conclusions Definitions relative experiences overlapped considerably, but they varied by systematic, environmental, personal factors. was used interchangeably connote interfered goals positive at core profession's higher calling, raison d'être many physicians. agree on definitions these terms clarify meaning an appropriate balance.
