From Medical School to Residency: Transitions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

ABSTRACT
The start of a new academic year in graduate medical education will mark transition for postgraduate 1 (PGY-1) residents from school into residency. relocation individuals has significant implications given the COVID-19 pandemic and variability outbreak across United States, but little is known about extent geographic taking place.We reported historical trends PGY-1 staying in-state those starting residency out-of-state to quantify movement beginning training each year.We analyzed data collected by Accreditation Council Graduate Medical Education years 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, comparing locations programs determine number matriculants schools schools. International graduates (IMGs) were shown separately analysis then combined with matriculants. US citizens who trained abroad counted among IMGs.The total PGY-1s increased 10.3% during 3-year time period, 29 338 32 348. When combined, IMGs USMGs transitioning one state or country another accounted approximately 72% year. Approximately 63% matriculated program state, made up 24.6% 23.1% over period.Each brings substantial amount that highlights need policies procedures specific pandemic.
