ABSTRACT
Scatter plots are popular for displaying 2D data, but in practice, many data sets have more than two dimensions. For the analysis of such multivariate it is often necessary to switch between scatter different dimension pairs, e.g., a plot matrix (SPLOM). Alternative approaches include "grand tour" an overview entire set or creating artificial axes from dimensionality reduction (DR). A cross-cutting concern all techniques ability viewers find correspondence points views. Previous work proposed animations preserve mental map view changes and trace as well clusters same underlying set. In this paper, we evaluate variety spline- rotation-based transitions crowdsourced user study focusing on ecological validity. Using results, assess each animation's suitability tracing across changes. We whether order horizontal vertical rotation relevant task accuracy. The results show that rotations with orthographic camera staged expansion depth axis significantly outperform other animation traceability individual points. Further, provide ranking animated transition However, could not any significant differences clusters. Furthermore, identified by direction guide further studies determine potential confounds these differences. publish reuse framework D3.js plug-in.
