A solution for co-locating 2D histology images in 3D for histology-to-CT and MR image registration: closing the loop for bone sarcoma treatment planning

ABSTRACT
This work presents a proof-of-concept solution designed to improve the accuracy of radiographic feature characterisation in pre-surgical CT/MR volumes. The involves 3D co-location 2D digital histology slides within ex-vivo, tumour tissue CT In initial step, laboratory measurements obtained during dissection were used seed placement individual slices corresponding process was completed by aligning bone images using in-plane point-based registration. Six bisected canine humerus datasets ex-vivo and validate placements. Digital seeding exhibited plane misalignment 0.19 +- 1.8 mm. User input sensitivity caused 0.08 0.2 mm translation between 0 1.6 degrees deviation. These are similar magnitude reported 0.9-1.3 1.1-1.9 related prostate [1]. Although this only on animal femur sarcoma slide images, can be generalised various geometries presentation sites. Furthermore, co-locates high-fidelity data advance with minimal disruption existing clinical workflows. Improved accuracy, supported resolution enhance surgical planning patient outcomes bringing insights offered closer start presentation-diagnosis-planning-surgery-recovery loop.
