ABSTRACT
Introduction: Painful crisis is the most common manifestation of sickle cell anemia (SCA), hence rapid pain control and analgesia should be provided [1][2]. Pentazocine a narcotic agonist/antagonist analgesic commonly used in Nigeria for management both medical surgical conditions. Reports on opioid abuse/dependence amongst SCA patients are not published, we report young lady with pentazocine dependence seen at psychiatric clinic. Case Report: We case 17-year-old known female six-month history excessive use pentazocine. She started self-injection 18 months ago following bone said to have strong desire drug which she uses daily basis. Initially, 30 mg but currently injects 60 bd. has developed hyperpigmented macules indurations scarification marks forearms. A diagnosis mild depression patient was made. admitted unit managed accordingly. Conclusion: Health care workers sensitized dangers abuse especially anemia. All chronic that require long duration drugs counseled symptoms informed immediately their doctors.
