Comorbid conditions in patients with physician diagnosed COPD: Data from a tertiary centre in South India

ABSTRACT
Background: COPD represents an increasing burden worldwide. is a leading cause of hospitalizations in adults, particularly older adults. Comorbidities are common cause, or contributing to many these hospitalizations.
Aims & Objective: To study the comorbid conditions patients with physician diagnosed tertiary centre South India.
Material and Methods: A random sample 500 after taking verbal consent were selected from all who attended Dr Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute Medical Sciences Research Foundation, Chinnaavutapalli, Vijayawada, over period 1year 2012. Personal interview was held collect data including age, gender, literacy, occupation, comorbidities.
Results: The mean age 61.2. Out which 47.2% below 60 years 52.8% above years. Males constituted majority population (80.8%). 77% total gave history smoking. Majority had 2 illnesses (30%). Among co morbidities, depression commonest illness (50.4%), followed by anaemia (44%).
Conclusion: Knowledge regarding associated comorbidities care center helps take comprehensive management plan. We recommend screening for possible so that appropriate treatment can be initiated at earliest as decrease cost burden.
