ABSTRACT
Depressive disorders are characterized by sadness, loss of interest, feelings guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep appetite, tiredness, and poor concentration. Mental disorders, including depression, prevalent globally, particularly in prison populations, where conditions exacerbate existing issues. This study aims to assess the level depression among convicted male prisoners aged 18-50 years Attock using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).The primary objective is find out prevalence examine association between somatic symptoms sociodemographic variables. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 109 prisoner samples calculated through Open-Epi selected Convenience Sampling random selection technique. validated structured questionnaire prepared which contains three sections i.e. demographic data, BDI. SPSS version 29 used for data analysis Chi-square, phi, p-values were statistical significance various factors. p < 0.05 significance. The Normal (11.9%), Mild-mood disturbance (19.3%), Border-line (22.9%), Moderate (35.8%), Severe (7.3%), Extreme (2.8%).Changes lethargy, suicidal thoughts, mood changes, disturbances strongly correlated severity scores while others like interest use drugs/alcohol show only moderate association. Thus, findings reveal also that 68.8% inmates suffer from 22.9% falling range borderline clinical depression. There an urgent need targeted interventions reduce rates societal well-being. BDI proves be effective tool measuring this population.
