COVID-19 as a risk factor for the development of pulmonary fibrosis in a referral hospital in Lima, Peru

ABSTRACT
Introduction The emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, but we must study potential sequelae left in population. Cases of pulmonary fibrosis have been reported after severe COVID-19. However, association between these factors not widely studied Latin American countries, one regions most affected pandemic. Methods A case-control was conducted to determine whether a history hospitalization due is risk factor for developing fibrosis. We compared patients with radiological diagnosis on high-resolution computed tomography (cases) those without such findings (controls), March 2021 and June 2023 referral hospital Lima, Peru. Results Among total number evaluated, median age 72 years, predominance females (58.2%). 7.5% had COVID-19, 6.1% control group (OR 1.24; 95% CI 0.65 2.36). stratified analysis revealed significant odds ratio arterial hypertension 5.9; 1.28 27.34). follow-up 315.5 days. Conclusions Hospitalization year medical discharge, except hypertension. Evidence suggests that prevalence may decrease over time.
