Environmental risk factors and hospital-based cancers in two Nigerian cities

ABSTRACT
This ecologic study assessed disparities between environmental risk factors and cancers in two Nigerian cities. Environmental data were obtained for Port Harcourt (highly industrialized) Ibadan(less cities respectively. Ten- year cancer records also from the University of Teaching Hospital (UPTH), College (UCH), Ibadan. Data analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi square t-test statistics at 5% level significance. particularly levels polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons air was higher than Ibadan locality (p <0.05). Both skin lung area (19.0 3.7%, respectively) (10.4 3.2%, combined group < 0.001). Therefore, people living highly industrialized communities with increased are likely to have a probability develop cancers. In-depth studies required establish empirical links identified prevalence cancers.   Key words: Environmental quality, communities, cancer.
