Self-Assessment of Non-communicable Diseases related Competencies among Interns of a Medical Institute of Nepal

ABSTRACT
Introduction: One of the essential strategies to tackle rising burden non- communicable diseases (NCD) is development competent local human resource. Assessing level competencies in pre-service curriculum first step towards building an NCD-ready health workforce. This study aimed assess perception competence delivering World Health Organization Package Essential Non- (WHO-PEN) interventions among interns Maharajgunj Medical Campus Institute Medicine (IOM). Methods: A survey was conducted at using online questionnaire. The questionnaire contained seven sections on different prevent and manage NCDs. Ethical approval obtained from Institutional Review Committee IOM. Descriptive analysis done identify competencies. Statistical performed Microsoft Excel IBM SPSS version 20. Results: Majority expressed low moderate confidence managing patients with presenting complaints major Most could perform diagnostic procedures screening related NCDs mental disorders under supervision only (56.9%-68.6%), one third felt they were unable spirometry visual inspection cervix acetic acid. provide counseling NCD risk factors, self-care palliative care supervision. not key service performance measures their data sources. Conclusion: Skills independently diagnosing for NCDs, counselling healthy lifestyle, alcohol tobacco cessation conduct motivational interviewing, limited.
