Fasting serum C-peptide is useful for initial classification of diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents

ABSTRACT
With rising obesity rates in children, it is increasingly difficult to differentiate between type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM, T2DM) on clinical grounds alone. Using C-peptide as a method of classifying (DM) has been suggested. This study aimed find correlation fasting level DM types children adolescents.A total 223 diabetic newly diagnosed at 5 hospitals January 2001 December 2012, were enrolled this study. Initial classification was based laboratory data including diagnosis; final additional (pancreatic autoantibodies, human leukocyte antigen type, course).Of 140 with T1DM (62.8%) the remaining 83 T2DM (37.2%). The mean serum significantly lower (0.80 ng/mL) than (3.91 ng/mL). Among 54 had <0.6 ng/mL; they all T1DM. proportion increased accordance level. Forty-nine >3.0 48 them (97.9%) T2DM.In study, we found that if ng/mL diagnosis, could be excluded; ng/mL, diagnosis unlikely. finding suggests useful for time youth.
