ABSTRACT
Background: Numerous studies have suggested that selenium deficiency may be associated with an increased risk for several types of cancer, but few focused on thyroid cancer. Materials and Methods: We examined the association between post-diagnostic fingernail levels differentiated cancer in a French Polynesian matched case-control study. Conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios 95% confidence intervals. Results: The median concentration among controls was <TEX>$0.76{\mu}g/g$</TEX>. Significantly, we found no after conditioning year birth sex additionally adjusting date (highest versus lowest quartile: odds-ratio=1.12, interval: 0.66-1.90; p-trend=0.30). After additional adjustment other covariates, this remained non-significant (p-trend=0.60). When restricting analysis 10 mm or more, nails non-significantly positively linked (p-trend=0.09). Although significant interaction evidenced iodine effect (p=0.70), (p-trend =0.10) positive seen patients less than 3 ppm nails. highest Polynesia Marquises Islands (<TEX>$M=0.87{\mu}g/g$</TEX>) Tuamotu-Gambier Archipelago (<TEX>$M=0.86{\mu}g/g$</TEX>). Conclusions: Our results do not support, individuals sufficient selenium, greater long-term exposure reduce risk. Because these findings are based measures, prediagnostic needed corroboration.
