ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE Substantial evidence exists to indicate bidirectional relationships between obesity and depressive disorders the importance of fat distribution this relationship. This analysis used a well-characterized sample individuals in late adolescence determine association illness distribution. METHOD Medically healthy 15- 20-year-olds, one-half whom had recently begun treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, underwent comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that resulted diagnostic classification weekly disorder ratings over prior 4 months using Longitudinal Interval Follow-Up Evaluation. A whole-body scan, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, allowed estimations total body less head (TBLH), mass, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass. Assessments occurred September 2010 April 2014. Multivariable linear regression analyses, adjusted for relevant covariates, examined DSM-IV-TR-diagnosed major (MDD) VAT, primary outcome interest. These procedures also determined whether significant associations were confined overweight/obese participants. RESULTS The included data from 200 participants (71% female; mean age = 19.0 ± 1.6 years), 128 current MDD. presence MDD was associated increased mass among (Cohen d 0.79, P < .02), but not normal weight true both nonvisceral measures. Accounting generalized anxiety (GAD) did alter findings. CONCLUSION In adolescents, central adiposity may be those who are overweight/obese. Despite high comorbidity GAD disorders, only latter appeared significantly adiposity.
