Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Prevention of Mood and Anxiety Disorders

ABSTRACT
Psychiatric disorders in general, and major depression anxiety particular, account for a large burden of disability, morbidity premature mortality worldwide. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have range neurobiological activities modulation neurotransmitters, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation neuroplasticity, which could contribute to psychotropic effects. Here we reviewed recent research on the benefits omega-3 PUFA supplements prevention against depression, bipolar disorders, interferon-α-induced patients with chronic hepatitis C viral infection, posttraumatic stress disorder. The biological mechanisms underlying PUFAs'psychotropic effects are proposed reviewed. Nutrition is modifiable environmental factor that might be important medicine, been applied many years secondary heart disease PUFAs. This review extends notion nutrition psychiatry calls more researches prospective clinical studies justify preventive application PUFAs daily practice.
