This review presents several alternatives to replace antibiotic therapy and make the European aquaculture industry more friendly environmentally sustainable. The first part of this highlights growing importance worldwide for its ability supply low-cost proteins lipids. second discusses different strategies these replacements, from recombinant vaccines diets with low environmental impact rich in bioactive molecules that can benefit other species. Specifically, beneficial effects compounds...

The study focused on the macroscopic, histological, and biometric analysis of European hake females in GSA 17 (Central-North Adriatic Sea). From 2013 to 2015, 976 were collected analyzed monthly. Though spawning conditions found during whole year, trend GSI showed a peak reproductive season from April July 2014 2015. HSI Kn reached highest values September, after peaks. In 2013, these indices did not highlight an evident peak, probably due adverse event that occurred previous winter shelf....

Abstract Effective stock assessment relies on the evaluation of reproductive potential a population, but this is often achieved using fast, inexpensive, and inaccurate macroscopic indicators gonadal maturity. Indeed, approach suffers from high error rates as result misclassification operator errors. Although histology considered gold standard to assign stages, it represents time‐consuming expensive method. Therefore, cost‐effective approaches are currently needed assess species‐specific...

The Mediterranean swordfish (Xiphias gladius) has been recently classified as overfished and in 2016, the International Commission for Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) established a multi-annual management plan to recover this stock. To successfully achieve goal, knowledge about biology is needed. date, few studies on have performed none them provided useful insights into reproductive at molecular level. Here we set characterise dynamics underlying ovarian maturation by employing de...

Abstract The northern Adriatic Sea is an important foraging ground for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) within Mediterranean Sea. Here, stranding patterns of turtles were examined over a four-year period (2019–2022) along short (17 km) stretch Italian coast south Po River delta. A total 355 records (alive, n = 24; dead, 331) analysed, and curved carapace lengths (CCL, notch to tip, cm) mainly reflected large juveniles sub-adults (average CCL 57.2 cm; 95% CI...

Xiphias gladius is an important fishing resource. The Mediterranean stock affected by overfishing and declining. In this light, the aim of study was to evaluate cross-talk among metabolism, stress response, immune system reproduction in immature mature females, coupling histological transcriptomic approaches. transcriptome livers from 3 females analyzed using Artificial Intelligence RNA-Seq. For analysis, ovary liver samples were collected 50 specimens caught during reproductive season Sea....

In the Mediterranean Sea, a demographic substructure of Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus has emerged over last decade, with old and young individuals exhibiting different horizontal movements spatial-temporal patterns gonad maturation. present study, histology molecular reproductive markers were integrated gonad-specific mir-202 gene expression ovarian localization to provide comprehensive picture performances in females investigate role played by during gonadal During period, (>100 kg;...

Abstract Over the last two decades, many efforts have been invested in attempting to close life cycle of iconic Atlantic bluefin tuna ( Thunnus thynnus ) and develop a true aquaculture-based market. However, limited molecular resources nowadays available represent clear limitation towards domestication this species. To fill such gap knowledge, we assembled characterized de novo larval transcriptome by taking advantage publicly databases with final goal better understanding development. The...

Abstract The northern Adriatic Sea is an important foraging ground for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) within Mediterranean Sea. Here, spatial-temporal patterns of turtles strandings along a short portion (∼18 km) coast south Po River delta (Italy) during three-year period (2019-2021) were investigated. A total 244 records (alive, n =7; dead, =237) analysed and curved carapace lengths (CCL, notch to tip, cm) mainly reflected sub-adults (average CCL=55.2 cm; 95% CI=...
