Palaeolithic sites in Russian high latitudes have been considered as Upper and thus representing an Arctic expansion of modern humans. Here we show that at Byzovaya, the western foothills Polar Urals, technological structure lithic assemblage makes it directly comparable with Mousterian Middle industries so far exclusively attributed to Neandertal populations Europe. Radiocarbon optical-stimulated luminescence dates on bones sand grains indicate site was occupied during a short period around...
This paper discusses the Upper Palaeolithic sites situated in Ural region within chronological context, as well their implications for our views on occupational history of Urals during Paleolithic. Two clusters distribution Paleolithic have been identified: Middle and Southern Urals, located border between East European Plain foothills western slope confined to meridional parts valleys Kama Belaya rivers tributaries. The data chronology cultural features are given, stages human settlement...
Here, we present and discuss results from geo‐archaeological palaeo‐zoological investigations at the Palaeolithic site Pymva Shor, in Russian Arctic. As many as 3324 vertebrate fauna remains were recovered during two excavations. This includes bones of mammals, birds fish. Radiocarbon dates obtained 26 specimens. The show ages range 30–3 cal. ka BP . Hare reindeer are best represented amongst identified mammalian species, whilst ptarmigan various wader species dominate avian bones....
The article discusses the materials of Early Upper Paleolithic sites Zaozer’e, Garchi I and Byzovaya situated in northeast East European plain on Urals (58—67°N; 50—60°E), Pechora Kama river basins. In this region, two episodes initial human occupation are recognizable. first (Zaozer’e site, 35—33 kyr BP) may represent earliest penetration anatomically modern humans into north Europe, while second one (Garchi sites, ca. 29 can be associated with migration some Streletskian populations to...
Abstract During the period 1984–1986 archeological excavations were carried out in “Bol'shoy Glukhoy”; cave, a karst cave on Chusovaya River, tributary of Upper Kama northeastern European Russia. The revealed multilayer Paleolithic site, with at least five distinct culture layers. Three layers from represented only brief periods occupance. lowest layer is dated to Acheulean epoch Middle Pleistocene (Late Dnepr) basis morphology stone tools found, and geological paleonto‐logical data. This...
