Regions of the arterial tree exposed to laminar flow, which exerts high shear stress, are protected from inflammation, endothelial cell (EC) death and atherosclerosis. TNFalpha activates NF-kappaB transcription factors, potentially exert dual functions by inducing both proinflammatory cytoprotective transcripts. We assessed whether stress protects EC modulating function. Human umbilical vein (HUVEC) were cultured under (12 dynes/cm2 for 16 h) using a parallel-plate flow chamber or maintained...

When investigating complex congenital heart disease, determination of atrial situs is essential. Pathological studies have demonstrated that the best predictor thoracic situs. To assess situs, bronchial tomography was performed in 92 patients with disease. Sixty-four these, without abnormalities or cardiac position, formed 'normal' controls. The lengths left and right main bronchi were measured. these related to age, results analyzed statistically, linear discriminant equations resulted...

A short review of two chambered left ventricle is given, and this rare condition briefly compared contrasted with the more common involving right ventricle. Three cases are described, each which presents a new variety subdivision ventricle; in these was first shown by angiocardiography. The case had heart hypoplasia dysplastic stenosis mitral aortic valves severe endocardial fibroelastosis main ventricular cavity. second also showed dysplasia sided pronounced fibroelastosis, addition there...

A retrospective study was made of 158 patients with unstable angina admitted to a coronary care unit over 4-year period. Twenty (13 per cent) had myocardial infarcts while in hospital, and these 3 died; three others died without preceding evidence infarction. There thus an acute mortality rate 4 cent. Patients persisting after the first 24 hours those previous history ischaemia were more likely develop infarct or die hospital. Follow-up information, ranging from 7 years, available 144 152...

To correlate anatomy with hemodynamics, the angiocardiographic findings were reviewed in 42 patients common ventricle (CV). Nine had normally related great arteries (NRGA), 12 d-malposition, 21 l-malposition and 5 a atrioventricular valve. Selective outlet chamber (OLC) angiocardiograms available 14 out of 29 OLCs. OLC position varied from anterior to right CV posterior left it; two categories (anterior lateral OLC) delineated by line 45 degrees theleft horizontal plane. The was all NRGA,...

The enzyme ferric reductase catalyses the reduction of Fe(III) as a prerequisite to its transportation across cell membrane. Duodenal mucosal biopsies from iron overloaded patients with genetic haemochromatosis (GH) have increased activity and absorption compared controls, yet GH mucosa is deficient. A similar GH-related deficiency also seen in macrophages. aim this study was investigate whether macrophage altered GH, determine monocytes differentiated erythroleukaemic K562 line studied...

The advantages of angled angiographic projections are demonstrated in a review 55 cases tetralogy Fallot. Particular attention was paid to the origins branch pulmonary arteries, whose diameter measured and compared with that descending aorta, showing 12 per cent there narrowing below 40 aortic diameter. Right arch present seven (13%) major coronary artery anomaly two (4%).

A 40 year old man presented with recurrent episodes of dyspnoea whilst swallowing solid food. He had undergone right pneumonectomy and thoracoplasty for pneumonias empyema 23 years previously. Solid food boluses appeared to cause bronchial obstruction by compressing the surgically distorted left main bronchus. This is a new variant post syndrome.

An unusual connection of the left atrial appendage with a persistent superior vena cava was demonstrated at angiography in child ventricular septal defect, aortic valve stenosis, and isthmus stenosis; this later confirmed necropsy. No previous reports anomaly have been found.

Digital subtraction angiography was used as the sole imaging technique in 95 infants and children aged 13 hours to 16 years undergoing cardiac catheterisation for investigation of congenital heart disease. Injections diluted contrast medium were made selectively at central sites, images obtained using continuous image intensification fluoroscopy either 32.25 nC/kg/s (125 microR /s) or 129 (500 /s). In all cases adequate diagnosis management with appreciably less a lower radiation dose than...

ABSTRACT One hundred and forty two coronary artery stenoses were collected during a period in which the right (RCA) was visualised lateral (LAT) left anterior oblique (LAO), LAO caudocranial (LAOCR) craniocaudal (RAOCA) projections, (LCA) same projections plus (LAOCA) RAO. Other views occasionally added. Taking “visible” to mean that stenosis well enough seen permit satisfactory grading of its severity, 16% (19 116) LCA 11 % (3 26) RCA visible only one view. Of these, case an stenosis, view...
