Abstract Theidentification of key biodiversity areas (KBA) was initiated by the International Union for Conservation Nature in 2004 to overcome taxonomic biases selection important conservation, including freshwater ecosystems. Since then, several KBAs have been identified mainly based on presence trigger species (i.e., that either vulnerability and or irreplaceability criterion thus identify a site as KBA). However, our knowledge, many these not validated. Therefore, classical surveys taxa...
Abstract The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera marocana (Pallary, ) is an endemic species of Morocco being listed as critically endangered and it stands among the world's 100 most threatened species. An extensive survey was performed in Sebou basin (total area approximately 40,000 km 2 ), covering 26 different sites. found only four sites limited to a small tributary (Oued (=River) Bouhlou). This population has very restricted distribution (no more than 4 river length) but appears stable...
The port of Al Hoceima is located on the Mediterranean coast about 150 km west Nador city, western extremity Al-Hoceima Bay, and only gateway in North-Central region. characterized by coastal artisanal fishing. objectives this study were knowledge main fleets that exist region, to identify different fishing gears used inventory, resources caught landed Hoceima. A detailed survey (concerning vessels their characteristics related method catches) was analyzed during period between Avril...
Abstract The life cycle of Unio foucauldianus Pallary, 1936, a critically endangered freshwater mussel species (Bivalvia: Unionida), includes parasitic phase using fish as hosts. Therefore, to develop more efficient conservation strategies it is essential know which are the suitable hosts U. . In this study, two approaches were used assess : determination infestation rates fishes under natural conditions through monthly sampling (from January June) in Laabid River (Oum Rbia basin) and N'Fis...
In Morocco, many uncertainties surround the current diversity and distribution of bivalve family Sphaeriidae. Such information, including taxonomy conservation status, are vital for further studies to improve knowledge this in Morocco represents first step towards development a national plan all freshwater bivalves.Between 2016 2019, several investigations were carried out assess Sphaeriidae different basins covering types habitat (lakes, springs, rivers small ponds). The identification...
Studies on the bivalve family Sphaeriidae in North Africa are very limited at surface water level, but even more for caves. During an expedition 2019 to Ait M’hamed cave (Oum Er Rabia Basin), six specimens of genus Pisidium were collected. Morphometric and genetic analyses showed that these individuals belong species subtruncatum Malm, 1855. This work is first step towards future exploration Africa.
The morphological plasticity of bivalve species may impair their correct identification. Pisidium (Sphaeriidae) are difficult to distinguish, notably the common pea clam, casertanum (Poli, 1791), which is a polymorphic species, often misidentified and confused with other species. This especially true since this most euryecious genus, being able colonize very different habitats. In study, elliptic Fourier Analysis, geometric morphometric method, was used assess intraspecific variation in P....
Abstract Pseudunio marocanus (Pallary, 1918) is an endemic species of Morocco and considered one the world’s 100 most threatened species. The life cycle this critically endangered freshwater mussel remains unknown. However, knowledge about discharge period its larvae ecological fish hosts crucial to adopt more effective conservation strategies. Given information gap, monitoring presence P. glochidia in from Laabid River was carried out January May 2019 determine period. Two different...
To discriminate potential stock units of the Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus within putative Moroccan–Saharan stock, we investigated morphological variation this species from three fishing areas (from north to south: Larache, Safi and Dakhla) in Moroccan coastal waters. We used a geometric morphometric approach based on 30 truss measures derived 14 landmarks 165 fish specimens. compared using multivariate analysis including discriminant Procrustes technique. found indications at...
The investigated reservoirs of fish farms, 76 taxonomic units zooplankton, represented by colloquials (Rotatoria) and crustaceans (Crustacea), have been identified. As part the dominant complex, representatives genera Asplanchna, Brachionus (Rotatoria), Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia (Cladocera), Acanthocyclops, Eudiaptomus (Copepoda) prevailed.During May to September, indicators zooplankton development were 118.73-348.37 thousand ind./m 3 -by number 6.08-9.95g/m 3by biomass. The basis phytoplankton...
